I am looking at updating some of my resources this spring. Does anyone have any good movie suggestions that would benefit or enhance units being taught? Thanks.

Buck
It is a documentary on a horse trainer. Great for animal behavior, or whatever else you want to send as a message. Also great for students with tough home lives. You can stream it off netflix.
Fathead
Fathead is a documentary that tells the other side of Super Size Me. It is very enlightening and well done. I work it into food sci and sometimes my ag issues class.
I also show Death on a Factory Farm which is an HBO documentary but I only show it to jrs. and srs. and get parent permission because of some of the content. I show this for ag issues to spark conversation around ethical treatment of animals and other things.
Children of the Dust Bowl
This is a book I use in all my ag 1 classes I think it has been made into a movie with Jim Carry in it. I use it to help get a better understanding of the creed and also a historical basis for agricultural education.
\
Shayla, I have not yet seen the movie but I do use the book. It is a quick read and I often take two class periods and read it to the class out loud. I know sounds like grade school but the students have always been engaged. It does go well with the creed if you think out of the box. I also use it to help illustrate how Contextual based education (hands on learning) can be so powerful read the book and you will see what I mean. Good luck.
Food Inc Good movie to debate various issues facing modern agriculture.
Away to Me Good movie for animal behavior and training
Growing Cities The growing urban farming movement
Eating Alabama A young couple returns home to Alabama where they set out to eat the way their grandparents did ? locally and seasonally.
Grow! It's not just 'Old MacDonald' on the farm anymore. All across the U.S. there is a growing movement of educated young people who are leaving the cities to take up an agrarian life.
Cafeteria Man Cafeteria Man is the true story of rebel chef Tony Geraci and his mission to radically reform Baltimore's public school food system with a recipe for change.
In Orgianic we trust Is an eye-opening food documentary that looks beyond organic for practical solutions for me and you. Local farmer's markets, school gardens, and urban farms are revolutionizing the way we eat.
Sweetgrass Modern sheep production in MT
King Corn Is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation.
Vanishing of the Bees Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S
I like to use "Justin Morgan Had A Horse" in my Introduction to Agriculture class. It is a Disney version but, it works and gets the point across. We make a "Yearbook of Agriculture" and the kids have to research an important person and prepare a "page" about that person. The person who researches Justin Morgan has the option to show the movie to the class.
Ross,
Here are a few that I have used in class:
Temple Grandin
Secretariat
Grand Champion (has Bruce Willis & Julia Roberts)
The Grapes of Wrath
A Corner in Wheat (an OLD movie, but good. I found a copy on Amazon)
Charolette's Web
The Farmers Wife (documentary)
Fresh (documentary)
American Farm (documentary)

Sorry I'm late on this post but I didn't notice anyone mention the BBC series, Inside Nature's Giants. There is a really good episode on a thoroughbred race horse. The scientists basically dissect large animals and check out and explain their anatomy. I haven't gotten the dvd's or anything but I've used youtube for it.
Just thought I'd throw that one in!
Farmland is a great movie to show the various aspects of agriculture. It follows several different farmers (animal agriculture, organic, conventional, and CSA). I show it after showing my students Food Inc to provide them with a chance to answer some of the questions that Food Inc creates. We then discuss both movies. Usually students leave with a much better understanding of the myths that are generated about agriculture, and can better argue those points if they arise in other classes or with other peers.
