Does anyone have suggestions on how to prepare students to excel in their agri-science fair projects?
Check out the agriscience resource guide and agriscience fair handbook on the national FFA website. Both have some great ideas and helpful hints for preparing for fair exhibits.
Thank you for these resources. They were both helpful.
I make it the final Exam for 1st semster in my Intro to Ag class.
I give the assingment the 1st day of class
I have an outline with what they need.
I have several deadlines throughout the sem.
1- topic idea, 2- Abstract, 3- Step by step, ect
I have them present for the final, with a board and the paper using the National FFA rubric for the presentation
I have the Library do a presentation on the Work Citied pages and good sources.
And an English Teacher do a lesson on APA format.
I also take them to other science fair before FFA in the area (Intel, and Jr Ac. As well as Google Science Fair online)
We have done very well taking 5 students to nationals a year and even 2 students advancing to the Intel national Science Fair in CA
Please contact me if you would like any more info
Thank you for this insightful plan/outline. I see why you have had such great success. When I get a class of my own, I will definitely consider this model.
Would you mind to share some of these documents?
Could you send me a copy of your outline and plans for the agriscience fair?
I teach the Scientific Method in the science course during 1st term. Second term they research and conduct the experiment. 3rd Term they do there application, report, board, and then they compete in a school science/agriscience fair. It puts them just in time to take the winners to State Convention. I worked with the other science teachers and we are all on the same page for doing projects. If you are the only teacher doing mandatory projects you may have a lot of kids not take a class.
Thanks for the practical method for teaching and implementing the scientific method into your classroom. Do you ever do a practice competitions/ fair with folks from the other side of the county? I like the idea of working with the other science teachers to coordinate your efforts.
Thanks again for your advice.
When I was in high school, my ag teacher had never done agri-science fair projects, but I wanted to enter so he collaborated with the chemistry teachers to get access to some of their supplies and expertise. If there is a teacher or two in the school you end up teaching in that excels in the regular school fair, that expertise typically transfers to the FFA portion. I worked with the chemistry teachers and my ag teacher on my project and won 3rd in the state science fair and 1st at the state FFA agri-science fair. One resource that is simple for getting ideas is giving the kids some Nasco magazines and exploring some of the products sold in them. There is a specific Nasco magazine with science supplies. I looked at it as a student and it sparked some ideas and that is how I got the start for my project. The Bear River and Lehi FFA chapters were my biggest competitors in agri-science so you might also try hitting up those advisers for ideas. Hope this helps! See you in class.
That is helpful. Thanks.
I am getting ready to have my students complete start their experiments and their reports. I was wondering what types of handouts/assignments do you give students to help them complete their application and report? Would be willing to share them with me?
Thank you all for this insight! I feel this component in my program is lacking and now I think I have some inspiration to prepare some students!!!!
I start with my kids in September right after teaching sci method. This is their required SAE, so they do it outside of school. I require monthly updates, 3 months in I require photographic proof that they have started it. In January, we take a week in the computer lab to work on the paper. Our state fair is in March, so the whole project is due mid-February. I try to break the paper down into parts for them so they don't get overwhelmed. The key is to emphasize simple projects.
