Does anyone have any resources that they use for an animal science unit in their Principles of Ag/Intro classes? I don't like the way I have taught it in the past so I am working on redoing this unit.
Here's an example of what I did last semester with my 8th graders - got the idea from another teacher here in SD Basically a PowerPoint for each specie and a graphic note taking guide for the students to use. It would be super easy to tweak considering how in-depth you want to go and how much time you want to spend on it. I had some activites throughout the unit (cheese tasting, etc.) but am still working on incorporating more hands-on stuff with it the next time around. I have PP & note guides for dairy, beef, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, horse, as well as dairy manufacturing & eggs. If you're interested in these I can post more or email them to you... hope this helps!
I would really appreciate that! This sounds a lot like what Ive been looking for. Thank you!
Would you mind posting the others? I'd like to see them.
I concur with Ivontress.
I think I would really like to see them.
I usually just give them an in-depth look at ruminant digestion...since that is fun.
I have them take notes and then they write a (1st person) narrative of being a foodstuff passing through the digestive tract and what enzymes, juices they encounter along the way...my reward for being the best written piece is that they become the new 'paradigm' that I show to the next batch of freshmen.
Here's a zipped folder with the whole unit - all the notes, worksheets, reviews, & tests. Hope this helps!!
Great stuff! I see some documents labeled Beef DOTS or Dairy DOTS. Is that some kind of review activity you do with the students?
I might use this for my freshman intro class. Thanks for posting!
Thank you!! I really enjoy that unit and look forward to beefing it up with more hands-on (and maybe food!) activities!
The 'dots' is an idea from the Agtivities book - there are 6 statements, 3 are true and 3 are false. Hang them up around the room, give the students 3 stickers and have them identify either the true ones or the false ones. I've used this as an introduction to see what they already know, at the end of a lesson as a conclusion/review, or the beginning of the next day to review the day before. Works well until everyone decides to follow the smartest kid in class around and copy them
If you have them laminated then you can use them over and over again..... or if you're running late its easy to print and have a student hang them up! You can get a pack of labeling dot stickers at walmart for a couple bucks, or use whatever stickers you have laying around... heck you could give them a marker and have them draw a star or something.
Hope this helps!
Hope some of these documents help you out! I teach everything I attached to my Intro to Ag class...which consists of mostly freshmen! Let me know if I can help you out in any other way! Good luck
