I am a second year teacher and I am looking for ideas on how to teach about the ruminant digestive system. Does anyone have any good ideas for activities? Copies of any diagrams or worksheets are welcomed as well.
Draw giant system with chalk on the ground and have students move through it
Dissecting one is always a great time
CEV has some decent videos of explaining the system
Waterford Large Animal Veterinary Science Curriculum #3 (Nutrition)
This has some ruminant information, you might also try searching on here to see what you can find!
I have students make a digestive system out of random materials from home and they have to label it with the functions. I think they enjoy it. I have had some pretty impressive projects over the years.
Create models from play doh/clay
models from random objects that they bring in
dissect one (get it from a butcher shop/processing plant/a student that hunts)
if you can get access to one- introduce the students to a cannulated animal
The Rumination Game I took this game from Ellen Mchenry's basement workshops --- my kids love playing. Sometimes I add cards to the game/change the questions but the basis is a great idea, they love playing it as a review for the Ruminate digestion exam.
