I am a new teacher in a new program and I was wondering where is a good resource to get Ag related videos? I realized this is open ended, but I have none! I thinkd it would be nice to have a selection of videos/dvds around for teaching variety, or as a good lesson for a sub. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Great question! My favorite videos have come from the History and Discovery Channel. If you go to each of those websites they have a store where you can order or you may request a catalog as well. I highly recommend the Blue Planet series, Planet Earth series, and Life of Mammals series from the Discovery Channel. Also the Discovery Channel Dirtiest Job series is great for careers. Any of the Modern Marvels from the History Channel relating to ag are phenomenal. There are titles on Harvesting Equipment, Farming Technology, Ranches, Commercial Fishing, Taxidermy, Logging, and George Washington Carver, and The Butcher. I use all of these way more than any other videos I own. Plus if you work at it for a few months you can tape them directly off the TV instead of buying them.

I agree with the History Channel & Discovery Channel suggestion; there was a great show just on called the History of the Pig; it comes up for sale in January. My students also love Dirty Jobs, and 3/4 of those episodes relate directly to agriculture, and Mike Rowe is really entertaining! It's also been fun because on some of the episodes that relate back to our community, we've actually gone out and done the dirty job after watching the movie!
If you have access to dish or direct tv you can watch several educational programs dealing with all types of agriculture on RFD-TV. Also, visit www.farmvideos.com this site has several videos you can purchase.
The best thing about the videos from the history channel is they are very cheap as compared to most educational videos. Cost usually run around 24.95 per DVD. The kids love them which means they will actually watch them and learn.
I also use a lot of material off of the history channel. If you sign up at their website, they will send you weekly programming information and sales that are going on at the web store. They are very reliable for quick shipping, but they also have free shipping deals quite often.
The CEV videos are good too, but many are beginning to be outdated and they are terribly expensive.
Thank you to everyone that has posted!! I got a collection of Dirty jobs and we have watched a couple in class, and the kids do love them!! I also got lucky and taped a neat Modern Marvels about Dairy last week. The CEV videos are the exact ones I was looking for (used them when I student taught), but I had no idea that they would be so expensive for such a short video!! I may get a few with next year's budget, but it just was not going to happen this year Again, thanks for all of the advice!!!
I taped that Modern Marvel episode a couple weeks ago about Dairy...it was great!! I agree about CEV videos being great resources in the classroom, but often too expensive and not very lengthy Three videos I have obtained from them that are excellent and I would recommend to ANYONE...are the DVDs and worksheet resources they produce for the EXCEL meat fabricating and slaughtering as well as the ruminant digestive system DVDs. They ARE GREAT!!!!!
Has anyone identified any resources from HGTV for landscaping?
I used "Ground Breakers". It usually comes on Saturday morning. They usually go all the way through a project and include discussion with the landscape designers. "Gardening by the Yard" is also a good resource. The guy that host this show is kind of corny but he has some good stuff. It isn't completely about landscaping but it does some times have topics related to it. It usually comes on after Ground Breakers so you can record them back to back.
This may be a little old, as I was reading through previous posts, but I signed up for emails from the History Channel. You can get Modern Marvel videos at certain times of the year for $10 each when you buy three or more. I have bought "Milk", "The pig", "Harvesting" and several others. I also subscribe to Netflix. If your district will allow the website, you can get several "Dirty Jobs" streaming as well as others. If you plan far enough ahead, you can also get DVD's sent through the mail. I have shown "Dirty Jobs: Dairy Cow Midwife" in my animal science class, and the students seem to like it.
Dirty Jobs is on sale online at the Discovery Channel store right now. You can get seasons 1 and 2 for around $65. Almost all of them relate to agriculture.
If you are on a budget and looking for some free videos to use with your classes (provided you can get internet in your room and project to a class visible screen or monitor), you might want to check out (note some of these are just snippets to trigger or grab a student's interest or posible introduce or summarize a topic):

- How It's Made at http://science.discovery.com/video/how-its-made.html This site has some great clips on how things like bacon, cheese, and milk are made, as well as chick production and more.
- If you're doing a unit on small animal science, such as dogs, Animal Planet has a site called Dogs 101. Each of the 7 dog groups has a brief overview to the group. Unfortunately it starts with a 20 second commercial. That's at http://animal.discovery.com/videos/dogs-101/ - but I can't 100% recall where (I take no credit for finding this. One of my students introduced me.)

Someone already posted about Dirty Jobs but I just bought all four seasons on Amazon.com for under $50. I've already used several segments as introductions and sub assignments. I like watching them, too, so I just make video worksheets whenever I sit down to watch one.
Would you be willing to share any of the worksheets you have created?
