As I prepare to student teach next semester, I could really use some ideas and materials for an Animal Systems and Structures unit. Does anyone have any lab ideas?
Hopefully your student-teaching is going well!
Here is a thread from a previous post about designing an animal habitat (can be adapted for large/small animal housing).
Animal Habitat Activity
A popular project in my Animal Science class is having students create a scaled drawing of animal housing (their choice of animal), then actually creating the structure, whether it is a barn, fish tank, cage, etc. I provide some basic construction materials (cardboard, Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, hot glue guns) and encourage students to bring in their own items. Even students that utilize the basic items can create some very realistic models and some students spent their entire Christmas vacations making these models.
I taught about scale drawings and provided practice opportunities for about a week, then gave them 7-10 days in class to complete their scale drawing, then construct their model. (if students aren't taking their time seriously, set a deadline and make them finish it on their own time).
