I need some new ideas and "stuff" for sheep, dairy and swine units for sophomores. Any resources would be great.
I have some power points on breeds. Or you talking about something more indepth.
Thanks so much for your quick reply. I wold like to refresh my current curriculum by adding to the basic stuff. I do "health"," housing'', "handling, and nutrition but I would like to see what others are doing . I somestimes feel as if I am being too basic.
in my specific animal units I try to to line up a field trip or industry person to come and speak to my class about what really goes on. This way, all the lessons that were taught in class make sense to the student. I also bring some animals into class (or we go to the animals) and I get a local vet out to show kids what they can do when accidents happen to save a few bucks from calling a vet.
Something more in depth. For example.....do you have anything you could share on sophomore level dairy nutrition, swine nutrition, aside from the digestive tracts and such? Managment stuff that deals with vaccine schedules and feeding, types of feed. I do pearson's squares and I ahve digestive tracts that I cut open. Thanks for any suggestions. Do you have anything good on meats?
Cindy, I just did a sophomore unit on meats with my production class. I have the unit quiz, a powerpoint that I modified from something on Georgia's Ag Curriculum, and meat ID powerpoints along with some worksheets. I can't email you the stuff or post it on here because all my files are at school, and Nonnewaug's firewall doesn't seem to like CoP, so I can email it to you once I get to school tomorrow!
What do you do for the Pearson Square, if you don't mind sharing! Thanks!
Check out another CoP post about this: Feed Rations Lab - Pearson Square Practice We did it in my animal science class last year and it was a big hit!
That would be GREAT if you wouldn't mind sharing . GREAT job at Goat Day !!!!!
Sorry this took me so long to post! Trying to get the stuff to a place where I have access to the internet that doesn't block CoP has proven interesting. Attached are some worksheets, PowerPoints, and Quizzes that I used in my Sophomore Ag Production class. The PowerPoints originally came from the Georgia Ag Ed Curriculum Website.
More fun stuff!
And I think this is it for all the stuff I brought with me for now...these are worksheets in class.
Just for anyone else looking at this... the Stages of beef website has been completely re-worked since the worksheet was made.
I just posted a bunch of stuff (it may be too late, but here it is if you want it). Most of my students in this course are juniors or sophomores so it should be at the right level for your course

For my beef unit, instead of doing a tried and true report I had my students make a magazine, some where incredibly creative. One girl made a magazine like seventeen but it was seventeen things about beef. I really thought my computer unfriendly group would rebel but they got into it as well. I am attaching the rubric I used.
