I just wanted to share this lab I did with my Vet Science students.  We have been studying the circulatory system and today was the blood day.  Instead of having the students take notes, we did an in class activity that was really successful!  It was relatively cheap too:  Karo Syrup, Red Hots, Sprinkles, and granola.

At the beginning of class we did a KWL on the board about what we know about blood, just to get the students thinking about the topic.  Next, we read through the lab sheet in class and discussed the directions together.  After that, the students created their edible blood.  Once everyone was finished, they answered their lab questions and we completed the L portion of the chart of the board.

The students had positive reviews, and lots of light bulbs moments!  Most students agreed that they had never thought about blood or why blood was even red.
