I was really attracted to this lesson. There are several things that I don't understand - I think just because the outline is brief - I am not exactly sure what class this is for - I don't know what "IPS" is. I am assuming more of a general science since it is a lesson about mixtures? Also the lesson plan is brief and I don't know where the students get from separating mixtures to creating salsa - It seems like it would be in day 2 - but it doesn't explain that. The lesson is also missing ingredients/recipe for salsa? I am sure the teacher has all this - it just wasn't shared here!
So - in terms of this lesson being EPIC - In my class - I would definitely also use this in a 9th grade class and I could see adding some elements to what is here to adapt to my own situation. I might add something like students creating a business plan or marketing plan for their product - or perhaps actually developing a school based business and marketing their product at a farmers market or to teachers. There definitely could be some food safety added in to incorporate some additional learning concepts.
As is - I think this lesson probably is EPIC for this teacher.
E - This lesson is very experiential - Students are engaged and involved in the learning process. They seem to create some sort of hypothesis for the different substances. My suggestions above might expand the experience to other aspects of learning.
P - I love that the students are conducting their own experiences - and then making their own salsa through this process - that is super cool. Could they also grow the vegetables? Wow - that could be a whole year long project!
I - I like that this teacher incorporated images into the lesson by having students match images with the different types of "mixtures" that she was teaching them. Even better - having the real items there for students to assess is great.
C - I think students are very connected, working in groups already - what if they connected with others if this lesson were expanded - What if they talked to someone about a loan to open a business - or local places they could market their product and how they would do that.
This lesson has a fantastic base and I think could be used by a lot of different teachers in different situations!
