CASE is excited to announce the 2016 Express Employment Professionals CASE Institute Scholarship Recipients! Four agricultural educators were selected to receive assistance with their CASE Institute registration. The Express Employment Professionals scholarships were directed specifically for Oklahoma agricultural educators attending the Oklahoma CASE Institute. The following are teachers who received CASE distributed scholarships from Express Employment Professionals.

Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) is gearing up for yet another summer of exciting and innovative professional development institutes. The Environmental Science Issues (ESI) course is ready to be field tested by outstanding agriculture teachers who are looking to add even more engaging CASE curriculum to their agriculture programs.

In October, we ran a story about the Environmental Science Issues course being added to the CASE Natural Resources Pathway. At that time, the course was still in the early planning stages. Since then, CASE has been working diligently to develop a rigorous and innovative course that incorporates 150 days of curricular activities, projects and problems which address the following:


  • environmental issues and problems
  • ecosystem management issues
  • energy issues
  • agriculture and environment relationships


Not only does the course cover current environmental issues, it also involves quite a bit of new and advanced technology, which students will learn to use in order to address those issues.


"I am excited about the technology students will use throughout the course to address local environmental concerns," said Carl Aarke, CASE Pathway Coordinator.


Students will have the opportunity to use Vernier sensors and ArcGIS software to visually analyze data. They will also learn to predict environmental outcomes through the use of statistical modeling, as well as measure energy consumption through an energy audit.


The course also includes an ethanol production lab, which has been developed by the course sponsor, Growth Energy. This lab is designed to introduce students to the technological advances in cellulosic ethanol.


As a third tier course in the CASE Natural Resources Pathway, the goal for ESI is to have students begin thinking about their research topic for the Agricultural Research and Development (ARD) Capstone course. Suggested research topics from CASE include:


  • Alternative energy
  • Ethanol production
  • The use of GIS to solve environmental issues such as nutrient runoff, animal populations, soil quality and natural resource conservation
  • Wildlife management
  • Habitat restoration
  • Government policy and regulations on local and worldwide environmental issues


Environmental Sciences Issues is sure to be a great course with many interesting and current topics covered. Make sure to add this course field test to your schedule this summer!
