                        FFA ALUMNUS IS CLEMSON UNIVERSITY’S OUTSTANDING YOUNG AGRICULTURALIST

 

COLUMBIA, SC….Dr. Matthew G.  Burns of Pendleton, SC, State Beef Specialist with Clemson University Extension Service, is a recipient of the Outstanding Young Agricultural Alumnus Award  presented by Clemson University’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Science   National Agricultural Alumni Board of Directors. He is an alumnus of the Pendleton High School Agricultural Education Program and FFA Organization.            

 

Dr. Burns, a 2005 graduate of Clemson University with a BS in Animal and Veterinary Science, earned an MS in Animal Science and Industry from Kansas State University in 2007 and was awarded a Ph.D in Animal and Veterinary Science by Clemson University in 2012.

 

A master communicator, Dr. Burns leads a dynamic public relations program for the animal industry in South Carolina on behalf of Clemson University. He serves as an adjunct professor in the Animal and Veterinary Science Department at Clemson and the Clemson Extension Service liaison to the SC Farm Bureau Beef Cattle Advisory Committee, the SC Beef Council and the SC Cattlemen’s Association. He also supervises the SC Junior Beef Round Up.

 

Actively involved in state, regional and national beef cattle conferences as a featured speaker, Dr. Burns receives substantial federal funding each year to develop and promote programs to enhance the success of the beef industry.  

 

He was nominated for this prestigious award by John W. Parris, director of the SC Agri-News Service in Columbia and a member of the Clemson Agricultural Alumni Board of Directors.

              

Dr. Burns is married to Dr. Ashley Burns, a native of Marietta, GA, who serves as Assistant Director of the South Carolina 4-H Program.  Together they have a four-year-old daughter named Eleanor.  Dr.  Burns is the son of Gary and Sarah Burns of Pendleton.
